Gosainkunda pilgrim dies of altitude sickness

MELAMCHI: A pilgrim heading towards Gosainkunda Lake, a significant religious site for Hindus, to mark the Janai Purnima festival died of altitude sickness, on Tuesday.

According to the Melamchi Area Police Office, the deceased has been identified as Subash Bhetwal (33) of Panchkhal Municipality in Kavrepalanchok district.

Bhetwal had died immediately after he suddenly collapsed while travelling on foot in Ichok of Sindhupalchok district, said Inspector Niraj Dangi.

Due to torrential rainfall, police along with the deceased's relatives were able to reach the incident site this morning only.

The police have appealed to the public to stay warm by avoiding cold water and to have warm spices like garlic, ginger and pepper to survive altitude sickness while travelling in high altitude areas.

Hindus are celebrating the annual Janai Purnima festival on Thursday this year.
