Government offices shut for three days in a row

DHANGADHI: Service seekers have been hit hard as the closure of government offices by the Unified CPN-Maoist cadres continues on the third day. Office chiefs said they did not carry out regular activities owing to security reasons.

''I came here three days ago to get the passport of my son made. But the officials are not working," said Hari Bahadur Saud, a resident of Chaumala.

Calling an indefinite bandh since Monday, the Maoist cadres have warned against operating government vehicles and those bearing an Indian registration, as a part of their programmes to protest the Dudejhari incident in Kailali. This has created difficulty for staffers to commute .

As a result, entrepreneurs in Dhangadhi have been compelled to ferry goods on either rickshaws or vehicles registered in Nepal. More than a dozen Indian vehicles have been stranded at Trinagar.

At a meeting held at the District Police Office, in a bid to resume the offices, the chiefs said they could not depend entirely on the police and have decided to urge political parties to reopen them. ''The chiefs refused to work under a security cover," said CDO Harikrishna Poudel. He said talks were being held with party leaders . However, the talks with local Maoist leaders ended inconclusively today.
