Govt to reinstate 100 police posts
KATHMANDU: The government is set to reinstate police outposts that were demolished during the decade-long insurgency in the country. According to Nepal Police Headquarters, plans are afoot to restore 100 outposts by April 2010 under the first phase of the programme.
DIG Bigyan Raj Sharma, spokesperson, NP, informed that a total of 768 police units were destroyed during the armed rebellion of the Maoists, severely affecting the law and order situation in the country in the aftermath of the war.
“The demolished outposts have been operating in makeshift or rented buildings,” he said.
Among those to be restored in the first phase are a couple of district police offices, a ward office, 50 area offices, six border offices and 41 police posts in various districts.
“A whopping 64 restorations are in the hilly region while the Tarai and mountain regions will have 27 and nine, respectively,” explained DIG Sharma.
He also said that the reconstruction of the police posts will cost millions of rupees. However, foreign donors have pledged financial support for the purpose.
The total number of police units stands at 2,068 across the country with the security strength of 56,077.
