Haliyas bounce back with protest

DADELDHURA: Haliyas of Far-Western Region have taken to the street once again, demanding their proper resettlement. Even as the government had freed Haliyas a year ago, they have not been resettled properly, the freed Haliyas today said, taking out a rally in Dadeldhura.

Demanding their proper resettlement, Lok Bahadur Parki, central member of Federation of National Haliyas Liberation Society, said,”We were compelled to take to the street as the government did not implement the agreement reached with us on September 5, 2008.”

The rally ended in a corner meet at the local bus park after which the protesters dispersed.

Addressing the gathering, Parki said,”We’ve been facing difficulties after the government released us.’’ He claimed that more than 15,000 Kamaiyas in the region had also been facing acute shortages of food.

He added, “We used to get food when we were in our masters’ houses but now we are starving.”
