Hearing on Tikapur carnage under way

Hearing on Tikapur carnage, in which eight persons including security personnel and a minor were killed three-and-a-half years ago, started at Kailali District Court from last Wednesday.

After a long investigation, a single bench of district judge Parsuram Bhattarai commenced hearing on the Tikapur carnage. Two government lawyers on behalf of plaintiffs and five lawyers on behalf of defendants are taking part in the hearing, according to court staffer Indra Bahadur Kathayat.

The court had issued an order to both plaintiffs and defendants to be present before the court with witnesses on 9 September 2018. Earlier, the hearing could not take place as the date could not be scheduled for the same.

Eight security personnel, including SSP Laxman Neupane and a minor, were killed during Tharuhat agitation on 24 August 2015.

As many as 26 persons including lawmaker Resham Chaudhary accused in the carnage have been remanded to judicial custody. Two minors have been kept at a Child Reform Centre in Pokhara, lawmaker Chaudhary is inside Kathmandu-based Dillibazaar Sadarkhor. Twenty-three accused have been kept in Kailali Prison. Twenty-two individuals involved in the incident are at large. They have been charged with murder, attempted murder and theft.

Agitators had used knives, spears and axes and murdered security personnel, including SSP Neupane.

Neupane, inspectors Balaram Bista and Keshav Bohora, head Constable Laxman Khadka and Constable Lokendra Chand, APF head Constable Lalit Saud, APF Constable Rambihari Chaudhary and minor Tek Bahadur Saud were killed in the incident.
