Government vows demolition drive after inspection finds illegal structures on public prope
KATHMANDU, JULY 6
Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has directed authorities to immediately clear encroached land belonging to Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar, warning that no one involved in the illegal occupation of public property would be spared.
During a surprise inspection of the hospital premises on Sunday evening, Gurung instructed the local administration to demolish structures built on government land, following reports that parts of the property had been occupied and developed for commercial leasing.
Minister for Health and Food Safety Nisha Mehta, who accompanied the home minister during the inspection, said it was unfortunate that the illegal structures remained in place despite the expiry of a 15-day notice issued earlier by the hospital administration. She pledged that the encroached land would be cleared within a week.
"The occupation of public land is illegal, and action will be taken in accordance with the law," Gurung said, adding that the district administration and security agencies would be fully mobilised to reclaim the hospital's property.
The inspection came after complaints from social organisations and local stakeholders over alleged encroachment of the hospital's land and its use for commercial purposes.
