KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 5

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has asserted that violence against women (VAW) will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

He made this commitment while receiving a memorandum from 26 local civil society organizations at the Ministry of Home Affairs today, marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

On the occasion, Minister Lekhak reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to eliminating all forms of violence against women. Highlighting his concerns regarding the safety of women in foreign employment, he assured that government mechanisms are actively working to safeguard women from exploitation and mistreatment.

"Women have increasingly become victims of abuse through social media and digital platforms in recent times. In a democracy, individuals have the right to criticize, protest, and express opinions, but it must be done in a respectful and civilized manner," the Home Minister stated. He added that efforts are underway to curb hate speech and violence proliferating on digital platforms.

The Minister also announced that the Ministry is preparing to table the Integrated Election Bill in the upcoming parliamentary session. The proposed bill aims to ensure proportional representation in line with the constitutional mandate.

Representatives from 26 organizations, including Kopila Nepal, Biswas Nepal, and Jagriti Mahila Mahasangh, submitted a 16-point memorandum.

The memorandum called for an end to caste-based discrimination, abuse, and all forms of violence against women.
