HoR mandate must for EC to work for CA polls: Nepal

Kathmandu, December 12:

The government must immediately forward a proposal to the House of Representatives and seek its mandate to the Election Commission to expedite all processes related with holding election for a constituent assembly, CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal said today.

Nepal said that Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has assured him that the CA polls would be held by mid-June, but at the same time expressed his concern over the delay in finalising the interim constitution.

Nepal said this while addressing a programme organised by the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU).

He, however, said a meeting of the leaders of the eight political parties would finalise the draft of the interim statute by tomorrow.

“The voters’ list must be updated immediately because it was last updated in 1999 and might contain flaws,” Nepal said.

He said it would be better to have Nepalis monitoring the arms management process than waiting for the UN monitors who are taking time to come.

He also revealed that the political parties have started a discussion on maintaining a record of those who are staying in the Maoist camps and on listing their arms and ammunition.

“All the political leaders are worried over the delay,” Nepal said.

He also said that he has told the Maoist leaders to mend their ways and stop extortion.
