House panel says Tikapur carnage probe failed to speak facts

KATHMANDU: The Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of the Legislature-Parliament has said the report on the Tikapur carnage failed to bring out facts.

The Parliamentarians attending the Committee meeting on Wednesday complained that the probe team led by Parliamentarian Jivan Shrestha could not make the facts on Tikapur incident public.

Parliamentarians including Kamala Gurung and Nara Bahadur Thapa Magar said the probe committee was unable to bring out the real and concrete points relating to the incident.

The report had no clear information as who - security persons or protestors - had gunned down the toddler, what were the reasons behind the protest despite having agreement of peaceful programmes a day before.

Those responsible for the carnage taking the life including that of a high level security official must be meted out stringent action.

The probe committee had the members including Ondi Sherpa, Kamal Kumar Ghimire, Chandra Devi Joshi and Pyarelal Rana.

As many as 11 security personnel including SSP Laxman Neupane were killed by the protesters waging agitation led by pro-Tharuwan cadres.

The parliamentary committee has directed the government to compensate the families who lost their loved ones in the carnage, and provide free treatment to the injured ones.
