Houses collapse in rains, 1 dead

Nepalgunj, August 31:

One person was killed and dozens displaced when heavy rainfall caused houses to collapse here yesterday.

Fifty-eight-year old Tul Bahadur BK of Banke’s Belbhar-2, who worked at a furniture shop in Nepalgunj’s Bhrikutinagar, was buried under the debris when his house collapsed, police said today. Rainfall that has been lashing the area since 10 pm yesterday and floodwaters from the Rapti river have inundated villages in Nepalgunj and areas near the river.

Dhambojhi, Ganeshpur, Seti BK Chowk, New Road and Buddhanagar are waterlogged. In Dhambojhi, residents moved to safer places after floods triggered by the heavy rainfall submerged their houses.

Holiya and Gangapur villages were inundated by floodwaters from the Rapti river. The floodwaters have also swept away a road at Holiya, police said.

People at Khadaicha in Holiya are without electricity after electricity poles were knocked down by the floodwater. Standing crops near the Rapti river were also destroyed after the areas were flooded.
