Ilam, March 6:

The villagers of Samalbung-7, Ilam, have established a community school on their own after their children could not attend an existing school, which is far from the village. They fund the school from profit made from the sale of ginger seeds. Harka Bahadur Rai, a local, said they collected 160 kg of ginger and harvested 960 kg, getting Rs 48,000. The amount and the pains taken by the villagers made the construction of the school building possible. At present, 50 students are attending classes from I to III. A social worker Nima Tamang donated one ropani land for the school, the school management committee chairman Phurwa Tamang said, adding the locals were collecting money to pay a lady teacher a monthly salary of Rs 1,500. Expressing his delight, Tamang said: “The children of the villagers were deprived of education because of inconvenient location of the school. One had to walk for 90 minutes to reach Gorakh Primary School which has agreed to our proposal for affiliation.” Tamang added they were working towards obtaining official permission for the school.
