KATHMANDU, JULY 8

Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has said that International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) need not be registered for mobile phone sets purchased in Nepal.

Issuing a notice on Wednesday, the Authority stated that it was not necessary to re-register the IMEI number of the mobile set imported and purchased in Nepal in accordance with the rules in terms of business.

NTA is implementing mobile device management system (MDMS) from July 16 in order to make it systematic by discouraging illegal import, sale, distribution and use of mobile sets.

"Many mobile users have been visiting the Authority due to confusion regarding whether they have to register IMEI of the set they have been using. Technical issues have surfaced in the system due to excessive flow of people registering IMEI of their mobile sets in NTA's website and it will take some time for resumption of the website," reads the notice.
