In a first, Baglung cops arrest man for caste discrimination

POKHARA: Although laws were in place, all reported cases of caste discrimination in Baglung were either resolved through personal dialogues or mutual reconciliation. But police on Thursday arrested a man on charges of practising caste discrimination at a wedding reception.

Following a complaint from the victim, law enforcement officers from Area Police Office in Burtibang arrested 32-year-old Lok Bahadur Buda and dispatched him to District Police Office for further investigation.

In his complaint, Om Bahadur Rasaili of Devisthan in Nisi Khola Rural Municipality accused Buda of throwing hate slurs based on caste and verbally abusing him as a social outcast during lunch reception at the wedding.

Following the incident, efforts of mutual reconciliation in presence of minority group right activists and media personnel were made at the Area Police Office. However, the victim argued for legal action against the accused enabling police personnel to handcuff Buda and dispatch him to DPO, informed Area Police Office Chief Om Prakash Yadav.
