Indian climber Rajib Bhattacharya dies on Mt Dhaulagiri
KATHMANDU: A seasoned Indian climber lost his life while descending from the summit of Mt Dhaulagiri (8,167m), the seventh highest mountain in the world, in western Nepal on Thursday afternoon.
Rajib Bhattacharya (43) died at Camp III after he complained of snow blindness late in the afternoon, according to Pemba Sherpa, manager at the Seven Summit Treks.
The renowned climber was returning from the summit when the incident occurred.
"Efforts are underway to bring his body to Kathmandu," he added.
Bhattacharya, a resident of Joypurbil in West Bengal's Howrah district, had climbed Mt Everest in 2011 and Mt Kanchenjunga in 2013.
Mt Dhaulagiri had witnessed its first summit of the season after four foreigners and a Sherpa guide, locally managed by Seven Summit Treks, made it to the top of the peak, Sherpa informed.
