KATHMANDU, MAY 19

In a bid to mainstream Karnali in information technology, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology launched a 'fibre to the home' (FTTH) scheme on Sunday.

The FTTH was launched as part of the government's priority to expand IT in Karnali Province with the optimal utilization of available means and resources, which is believed to significantly contribute to the elevation of people's living standards.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, virtually unveiled the service and expressed happiness that it would now help realize the slogan of internet in every home.

She drew the attention of Nepal Telecom to not only focus on business but also to emphasize quality service delivery, for which the concerned parties could extend cooperation.

The scheme launched on Sunday is expected to ease activities in government offices, community schools, and local governments so that public services can be provided smoothly to service seekers.

On this occasion, Minister Sharma reminded that Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) was urged to facilitate the expansion of electricity in far-flung areas. "The unavailability of electricity is a major hindrance to service expansion. So, discussions are underway with the concerned minister and officials," she informed.

Minister Sharma further reminded that the government had planned to observe the coming 10 years as an ICT decade as announced in the policies and programs for the coming fiscal year. The country could achieve progress only through the optimal use of IT. However, it needs cooperation and support from all sides, she reiterated.

Also the spokesperson of the government, Minister Sharma noted that once broadband internet was expanded in Mugu, with a focus on tourists visiting Rara Lake, it would not only facilitate essential communication but also contribute to the national economy.

The Minister also urged the concerned chief district officer and local organizations to extend support to resolve problems at the local level in case of construction and repair of repeater towers.
