KATHMANDU, JANUARY 20

Jhapa Revolt in the year 1978 is still fresh in people's mind. One of the rebel during the uprising was CPN-UML President KP Sharma Oli.

Jhapa Revolt played a pivotal role in taking the communist movement to a new height. In fact the CPN-UML has its roots in Jhapa revolt.

Coincidentally, the Parliament formed after decades is being led and dominated by the leaders from Jhapa itself. The Speaker of the House of Representatives is from Jhapa and it is very much likely that the deputy Speaker will also be from Jhapa itself.

UML's Devraj Ghimire, who was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives from the ruling coalition, is from Jhapa. He was elected to the HoR from Jhapa-2. Speaker Ghimire is a resident of Arjundhara Municipality, Jhapa. He was also the president of UML Province 1. After being elected the Speaker, he has resigned from the party's responsibility.

Similarly, Indira Rana Magar, who has been nominated by the Rastriya Swatantra Party for the position of deputy Speaker, is also from Jhapa. As the common candidate of the ruling coalition, Indira's victory is certain.

Rana Magar has been proposed by the MP of RSP Sobita Gautam and seconded by the MP of UML Krishna Gopal Shrestha, Narayani Sharma of CPN-Maoist Centre, and Rajendra Prasad Lingden of RPP.

In 2017, Rana was included in the BBC's list of inspirational women. She is also the founding president of Bandi Sahayata Nepal. Born in 1970 at Sanishchare-6 in Jhapa, Indira won the Ashok Fellow in 2005 for her social service.

She has also been running a children's home in Nayabazar of Kathmandu, and also in Sankhu, and Khudunabari of Jhapa.

Likewise, KP Sharma Oli, president of the second largest party in the House of Representatives, CPN-UML, is also from Jhapa. Oli is also the leader of the UML Parliamentary Party. He was elected from Jhapa Constituency 5. Although the government is led by the seven-party alliance, and Chairman of CPN-Maoist Centre Pushpa Kamal Dahal," Oli is leading the high-level political apparatus of the government.

Similarly, the chairman of the fifth largest party of the House of Representatives, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Rajendra Lingden is also from Jhapa. Lingden, who is also the leader of the RPP Parliamentary Party, has become the deputy prime minister and energy minister of the Dahal-led government. He hails from Haldibari Rural Municipality-1, Jhapa.

Likewise, National Assembly UML Parliamentary Party leader Devendra Dahal is also from Jhapa. The largest party in the House of Representatives, General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Bishwaprakash Sharma, also belongs to Jhapa. Elected from Jhapa-1 to the House of Representatives, Sharma is active in Nepali Congress and national politics for long.
