Kangaroo court alive and kicking in Pyuthan

Pyuthan, October 28:

Even as the Maoists are leading the government, their kangaroo court in Pyuthan is functioning.

The court recently slapped Top Bahadur Khadka, a close neighbour of Constituent Assembly member of Pyuthan-1 Narayan Prasad Adhikari, a fine of Rs 50,000. The court asked Khadka to deposit the amount after his daughter Chuma remarried in 2006, breaking her previous marriage.

According to Khadka, the decision was taken by Maoists district in-charge Santosh. Khadka has signed a letter agreeing to pay the said amount to the court.

Chuma married for the second time in Dang in 2006 after breaking her marriage with Durga Bahadur Khatri, son of Maoist district committee member Rik Bahadur Khatri ‘Agni’. “I had to leave my previous husband because I couldn’t bear the physical and mental torture. But I had returned all ornaments to my previous husband before remarrying in 2006,” Chuma said. She also said that her ex-husband and his family had still been torturing her parents.

“They have threatened me of life and destroying my house if I didn’t pay them the said amount,” Khadka said, adding he will not be able to pay the amount even after selling all his property. “I agreed to pay the amount to avoid immediate risk to my life,” Khadka said, adding that he has already paid Rs 5,000 to the court.

Meanwhile, CA member of Pyuthan-2 and CPN-Maoist’s central advisory member Dipak Bahadur KC said the incident was true and that the party had begun investigation into the case.
