Karnali Province produced 258,876 metric tonnes of maize this year, making it the highest-produced food grain, according to the Province Government's Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture, and Cooperatives.
The Directorate of Agriculture reported that maize is cultivated on 82,808 hectares across the province. Wheat ranks second, with 151,990 metric tonnes harvested last year from 71,769 hectares, followed by paddy, which yielded 146,679 metric tonnes from 41,304 hectares.
According to the Directorate's data, Salyan recorded the highest maize production in the province, with 74,700 metric tonnes this year. Surkhet produced 45,475 metric tonnes, Dailekh 45,310 metric tonnes, Jajarkot 33,313 metric tonnes, and Rukum West 35,340 metric tonnes.
Directorate Director Tilak Pandey further shared that Kalikot produced 8,060 metric tonnes, Jumla 10,500 metric tonnes, Mugu 2,138 metric tonnes, Dolpa 3,750 metric tonnes, and Humla 290 metric tonnes of maize.
Additionally, the province produced 18,826 metric tonnes of millet, 9,709 metric tonnes of barley, and 2,633 metric tonnes of buckwheat.
Millet and buckwheat are mainly cultivated in the mountainous regions, with millet grown on 13,704 hectares and buckwheat on 2,377 hectares.
