Kavre entrepreneur commits suicide in Davis Falls

Pokhara, April 6

It has been confirmed that the person who committed suicide at Davis Falls in Pokhara on Saturday evening was the well-known Kavre entrepreneur Jujukaji Shakya.

Shakya, 56, was the operator of Shakya Watch Centre in Banepa of Kavre.  He was also the vice-president of Reiyukai Eye Hospital, apart from his involvement in more than a dozen social organisations.

He is survived by his wife and four daughters who are currently living in the United States of America. “He seemed grim and disappointed for the past two or three months. He must have felt lonely without his family here in Nepal,” said one of his relatives over telephone. According to sources, Shakya had left Banepa at around 11:00am on April 2 and did not disclose his plan. He was seen in Pokhara at 4:00pm the same day. He had then headed for Davis Falls.

Shakya had visited the waterfall before buying yet another ticket for a second visit.

Upon getting inside for the second time, he had crossed the fence inside the waterfall at around 5:00pm.

Though some tourists were watching him, they cared less as they thought he was trying to take photographs. That was when Shakya jumped off, but got knocked in a rock mound. While the tourists were crying for help, he managed to jump off the mound into the water in no time. Eyewitnesses and authorities at the ticket counter had informed police about the incident.

A joint team deployed from Western Regional Police Battalion and Baidam Police had recovered the body. The security personnel recovered Rs 16,560 from Shakya’s pocket. His both hands were cracked and a deep cut was seen on his forehead. The body has been kept at western regional hospital for post-mortem.

“Though the kin of the deceased have identified his body through a photograph, they are yet to receive it,” said District Police Office Kaski DSP Gajusiddhi Bajracharya.

“The kin of the deceased are expected to arrive in Pokhara by today evening,” said DSP Bajracharya.
