KC says no to proportional election system

Kathmandu, September 30:

President of the Rastriya Janamorcha Nepal and spokesperson for the CPN (Masal) Chitra Bahadur KC said here today that the CPN (Masal) is principally against the proportional election system.

“We are ready to declare Nepal a republic before the constituent assembly polls, but will strongly fight against the proportional election system demanded by the CPN (Maoist),” he said at a press conference. However, KC, who is also the spokesperson for the CPN (Masal), said his party will not want the declaration of a republic to lead to the break-up of the eight-party alliance, thereby affecting the CA polls.

“The nation is readying for the mixed election system,” he said, adding that switching to another election system will only delay the polls as all poll-related procedures will have to be revised. “This will push the nation towards uncertainty.”

The election constituencies will be without representatives if the proportional election system is adopted, thus depriving the people of the opportunity to elect their representatives directly, he claimed.
