King obstacle to peace: Nepal

Kathmandu, January 31:

CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal today said the autocratic monarchy has been proved an obstacle to peace in the country.

Issuing a press statement on the eve of February 1, Nepal also accused the King of only talking about peace but not translating it into action.

Saying that repeating the word peace will not serve any purpose, Nepal alleged that the nation is heading towards militarisation and efforts are underway to gather arms to help the regime. Nepal also claimed that human rights and political rights have been trampled upon by the government.Referring to the government not responding to calls to announce ceasefire despite repeated calls from national and international agencies like the UN, European Union, the US and India, Nepal accused the King of setting a trend of disrupting others’ efforts for the restoration of peace.

He also referred to the Maoists’ three-month ceasefire and calls to the government from the civil society, political parties and others to reciprocate the ceasefire, Nepal said the government instead despatched army contingents to rebel stronghold of Rukum.
