DOLAKHA, JULY 28

The locals of Malu Bazaar of Tamakoshi Rural Municipality, Dolakha, have asked the government for help to save them from landslides.

On Monday, early morning floods triggered by heavy rainfall on Sunday night had caused damage to 10 houses and property worth millions of rupees. The flood victims in the Malukhola region are worried after losing their cultivable land.

"The floods not only swept away our farm and crops, but also a chicken coop," lamented Sangita Shrestha, adding that the unexpected floods dashed their hope of a better life.

Local Ram Bahadur Khadka was injured after being swept away by Monday's landslide. "I was swept away along with the landslide debris and ended up in the Koshi River. Thank god, I could clutch at some shrub on the river bank and rescue myself," said Khadka, who sustained multiple injuries all over his body following the incident.

The landslide has also caused damage to his house and swept away two truckloads of rice. "The doctor has told me to go to Kathmandu for a CT scan citing the injury on my head," he said. He asked the government to do the needful to resolve the problem of landslide rather than distributing relief and the likes.

Khadka further expressed fear that a night rainfall gives these days after the Monday's landslide incident.

According to District Police Office, 15 households have been displaced and 10 houses have received damage due to the landslide.

Meanwhile, landslides have damaged the bridge over the Tamakoshi River along the Dolakha-Ramechhap-Kathmandu road stretch at Malu itself and another bridge over the same river between Bhimeshwor Municipality and Baiteshwor Rural Municipality.

Rainfall-fuelled landslide is also said to have swept away a few houses in Kalinchowk Rural Municipality, Dolakha.

Overall, some 100 families have been displaced over the past week due to landslides across the district.
