Lawmakers set to pick Speaker, voting today
Yadav to propose Nembang’s name for the top post
Kathmandu, May 12:
The House of Representatives today unanimously passed a proposal forwarded by Nepali Congress MP Dilendra Prasad Badu to formally elect a Speaker tomorrow.
Following the endorsement of the proposal, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Chitra Lekha Yadav, announced that the House would start voting for the post at 2 pm tomorrow.
UML leader Subhas Chandra Nembang and Yadav are in the fray as the seven-party-alliance could not reach a consensus on the issue. Nepal Workers and Peasants’ Party (NWPP) today decided to back UML candidate Subhas Nembang for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
A statement issued by the party today said the party decided to back Nemwang as UML has said that it would not be part of the cabinet until Nembang is appointed Speaker.
“Since this (continued logjam) is not good in upholding the spirit of the mass uprising, we have decided to back the UML candidate,” the statement said. In yet another decision, the NWPP has recommended Sunil Prajapati to join the all-party talks team following a letter requesting the same from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The party has decided to lay stress on reviving the dissolved local bodies during the current session of parliament. Meanwhile, a source claimed that Deputy Speaker Chitra Lekha Yadav would propose CPN-UML leader Subhas Chandra Nembang’s name for the top post of the Parliament. “She has said that she will propose Nembang for the post of Speaker in tomorrow’s session before voting for the post begins,” a source close to Nembang told this daily. He added that she agreed to do so after a two-hour meeting held today. Some days back Yadav had reportedly said she would resign if she was not made the Speaker.
