Lawyer cum editor awarded in exile
NEW DELHI: Good deeds are recognised not within the national boundary alone but beyond as well.
Human rights lawyer and Editor of Sagarmatha Times, Jitman Basnet has won Global Citizen Karamveer Puraskar, which is awarded every year by India Confederation of NGOs.
The ICONGO is committed to creating a movement of socially responsible and caring citizens who would like to right every wrong by being drivers of change. Several other personalities from both India and abroad were also given awards under various categories for their contribution in respective fields.
Basnet was illegally detained and subjected to extreme torture at Bhairabnath battalion of Nepali Army for more than eight months in 2004 for running an article about the then King Gyanendra's assets in his magazine.
Basnet, who is also the General Secretary of Lawyers' Forum for Human Rights, came to India in self exile after the royal takeover of 2005. In 2006, even after the restoration of democracy, Basnet fled the country as he continued to receive threats from unknown callers for chronicling incidents of torture in his book titled 'Dark 258 Days’.
In 2007, India's Bharatiya Manav Adhikar Sansthan also honoured Basnet with Universal Human Rights Award for his contribution in the field of human rights in Nepal.
