Leaders split over means to placate Terai

Kathmandu, January 31:

Leaders representing major political parties today differed over ways of addressing demands of the Terai, especially over the system of election to be adopted.

UML standing committee member Bharat Mohan Adhikari said the existing problems cannot be resolved unless the proportional election system is accepted by all the parties.

“Only this (proportional election system) will address the issues and demands raised by the Madhesis, janajatis and other communities,” Adhikari told an interaction at the Reporters’ Club today. Adhikari also said this system of elections would ensure inclusiveness.

He also cautioned all concerned to adopt “extreme caution” towards what he said “series of conspiracies” being hatched by reactionary elements to avert elections to constituent assembly. “The government must immediately make public the Rayamajhi report to bring the conspirators to book,” Adhikari said.

Nepali Congress (NC) leader Arjun Narsingh KC laid stress on the need to go for elections on the basis of population and geography keeping in view the demands of the people from the Terai, hills and the mountains.

He added that there cannot be peace by sidelining the sentiments and demands of the Madhesis and other communities.
