At least 458 families displaced by Pyuthan floods, landslides
PYUTHAN: At least 458 families in Pyuthan district have been displaced by floods and landslides induced by torrential rainfall in past two days.
The displaced families belong to places including Phopli (170), Arkha (113), Puja (62), Khawanga (32), Syauliwang (18), Ligha (17), Lunga (17), Liwang (9), Darmi (8), Rajwara (6), Khunga (4), Okharkot (1) and Bhingu (1), informed the Pyuthan District Police Office.
The areas here have become uninhabitable with 70 houses fully destroyed and 160 more partially damaged.
The families have been forced to spend their nights under the open sky. According to them, however, authorities are yet to respond to their plight in any way.
According to the Chief District Officer Janak Raj Pant, the government has been urged to manage food supplies and shelter for relief at the earliest.
The District Administration Office, however, has informed that Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel have been dispatched with the relief materials today.
Since Tuesday, as many as 36 bodies have been recovered from the landslides whereas five are still missing.
Many livestock have also been washed away by floods and locals fear that the disasters might lead to epidemics in the areas.
Phopli VDC Secretary Pushpa Raj Thapa has stated that water supply in the area has been obstructed as the water pipelines were also washed away by the floods.
Meanwhile, NGO Federation of Nepal has urged members of the public from across the country to contribute relief materials to the displaced families.
