A 48-year-old Nepali woman climber is all set to begin her climbing activities in Mt Everest region early next month aiming to scale the world's highest peak for the tenth time this season.
Born in Makalu VDC of Sankhuwasabha, Lhakpa Sherpa aims to break her own world record by scaling Mt Everest for the tenth time, Mingma Gelu Sherpa, Managing Director at Seven Summit Adventure said.
"My sister will arrive in Kathmandu on April 8 and leave for the Khumbu region to attempt to climb the mountain," he said, adding that she now lives in suburban Connecticut in the US.
According to him, being part of the Seven Summit Adventure Everest expedition, a small crew accompanying Lhakpa would also be filming a documentary on her climb.
Earlier, Lhakpa stood atop the summit of world's highest mountain for the ninth time from the North Col (Tibetan side) in 2018. Except Lhakpa, no other woman in the world has scaled the peak so many times till date.
Without having any formal training on mountain climbing, Lhakpa, who grew up with 11 siblings, first climbed Mt Everest from the Nepal side in 2000. "This will be her second attempt on Mt Everest from the Nepal side," Sherpa said.
Lhakpa, also a former Seven-Eleven store worker, had reportedly scaled Mt Everest eight months after the birth of her first daughter and while she was two months pregnant with her second child.
According to Sherpa, Lhakpa will be climbing mountains for women's empowerment.
