Life of impregnated girl stuck in limbo in Bhojpur

BHOJPUR: A youth has been arrested in Dharan on a charge of impregnating an 11-year-old girl of Yaku in Arun Rural Municipality-5 of Bhojpur district.

The accused has been identified as Durga Bahadur Shrestha (21) of Yaku .

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Kaji Kumar Acharya at the District Police Office, Bhojpur, Shrestha was arrested on Wednesday after the  pregnant girl filed a complaint in presence of Women and Children Official in the District Police Office on Tuesday.

The girl's relatives said that they had handed her responsibilities over to Shrestha after they found her pregnant in mid-June. They alleged that Shrestha had promised to take her to his uncle's home in Dharan, however, he escaped.

Meanwhile, Women and Children Officer Pushpa Lata Upreti has demanded probe into the case. She asked why the denizens of Yaku couldn't send the girl to Dharan and why they couldn't give her protection.

According to Upreti, the girl had revealed the fact to her mother that Shrestha had had sexual intercourse with her after she found her abdomen growing bigger, in mid-December.

Although the meeting held in the village decided to couple up the girl with the accused, the guardians of Shrestha had not agreed to accept her as she was from Dalit community, Upreti added. It is legal to abort the pregnancy in the early stage, but now in the advanced stage, it is necessary to arrange the safe delivery of the child, raising and taking care, she said.
