BIRGUNJ, AUGUST 1
Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairperson Rajendra Prasad Lingden has said directly-elected prime ministerial system is desirable for the country.
Speaking at a programme organised to welcome new entrants to the party in Birgunj today, the RPP chief reiterated his party's stance for directly-elected prime minister.
"We all want prosperity in our country, and it's possible only under a different system whereby we have a king as the nation's guardian, a people-elected prime minister and a fully proportional election system,"
Lingden said. Further, he also spoke in favour of scrapping federalism, saying two layers of government would be enough.
"A small country like ours can't afford to keep so many ministers and local representatives, so it's enough if we have the central and local levels only," he said. "The so-called leaders have always been busy in personal aggrandizement and irregularities, so it's obvious that we can't afford to continue with expensive federalism," he added.
Lingden also noted the increasing foreign debt accrued by the country since the establishment of federalism in the country. "Five years before the implementation of federalism, we had 8 billion rupees debt; since the implementation of federalism, the debt has reached over 1.8 trillion rupees," he said.
The RPP chief also argued his party was the only alternative given how the three major parties and their so -called leaders had robbed the country in the name of democracy and republicanism. "We have an opportunity to chuck the existing parties out of power, so we need to avail this opportunity to defeat the so-called major parties and elect RPP to save the nation," he said.
Various other party leaders also spoke on the occasion today.
