Locals leaving village due to fear of landslides

MYAGDI: Residents of Dar village in Muna VDC of Myagdi have begun leaving their homes due to fear of landslides.

The hills above the village have started slowly caving in with the continuous rainfall. As a result, people have been spending nights in their relatives’ homes away from the village, according to a local resident Bel Bahadur Paija.

A total of 29 houses are at high risk while 47 houses at risk of falling into the way of the landslips, according to the District Police Office. Hence, the office has been warning villagers to remain safe.

“We go back to our homes during the day and then return back in the evening”, says Rupsara Budha of the Dar village. We cannot rest assure until the monsoon ends, he added.

The hills that suffered fissures during the earthquake have now started taking the form of landslides with incessant rainfall, said sub-engineer at the District Soil Conservation Office Birendra Mahato.

Meanwhile, Muna VDC Secretary Bishnu Prasad Poudel said that arrangements are being made for temporary settlement of the people affected by the possible landslides in Dar village.
