Madhesi women say CA polls must

Chitwan, August 19:

A five-day long national convention of Madhesi women concluded with a 17-point charter of declaration here today. The convention was organised by the Women and Political Centre (WPC) at Narayangarh of Chitwan.

Organising a press meet after the convention, the WPC said constituent assembly (CA) polls have no alternative. It said that only a representative and inclusive CA would end conflict in the country. The declarataion has urged the eight political parties, organisations concerned and Madhesi groups to make the polls a success.

The declaration has also called for filling Madhesi women’s candidates in constituencies and their proportional representation on the basis of equitable lists. It urged the political parties to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in the government.

It also asked the EC to arrange for trainers to train Madhesi women in their mother tongue.

The declaration also said that dialogue was essential to quell the unrest in the Madhes. It urged the government to declare those killed in the Madhes unrest as martyrs and provide compensation and government jobs to their families.
