KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 28

Nepali Congress Spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat lauded Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's role in securing the parliamentary ratification of the Millennium Challenge Corporation compact.

Organising a press conference at the party office here today, Mahat said the PM's mature decision and patience led to the ratification of the deal.

Two ruling coalition partners - CPN-Maoist Centre and CPN-Unified Socialist - which had initially threatened to vote against the compact finally changed their stance and voted in favour of the deal securing the parliamentary ratification of the compact within the stipulated deadline.

The US had set a deadline of February 28 to secure the parliamentary ratification of the compact.

Mahat said the NC maintained its consistent position vis-a-vis the MCC compact.

He said the $500 million MCC project was purely a development project and there was no other intention behind the project. He said the project was unique in the sense that it gave Nepal the full ownership of the programme.

Mahat said the precedent set by the MCC compact could help Nepal get fair deal with other donor agencies and countries in the future. It will lead to a healthy competition among international donors, he added.
