Makwanpur Dalits lagging far behind

Hetauda, July 28:

Only 10 of the 25,000 Dalits in Makwanpur district have joined government jobs, statistics revealed by the Underprivileged Community Development Forum (UCDF) said.

Dalits have lagged behind in every sector including education and politics and their standard must be uplifted, the UCDF said.

Although the government provides very few quota for Dalits, they too are not fully utilised, chairperson of the UCDF Sanubhai BK said.

Only one of the 43 VDC secretaries in the district is from the Dalit community. Narayan Bahadur Rizal (Gajmer) is working as secretary in Ipa VDC.

“A majority of the Dalits are not educated and therefore, their standard has not improved,” Rizal said. Padam Bahadur BK, headmaster of Churiyamai Secondary School, stressed the need to educate the Dalits.

“As compared to other fields, the number of Dalit leaders is more in the district,” UFDC chairperson Sanubhai said.

“The government has to implement the policy of ending caste and racial discrimination,” Nepali Congress leader Gopilal BK said.

Anju Sunar, a Dalit social worker, said that the organisations of Dalits have been playing

a vital role to uplift the standard of the Dalit community.
