KATHMANDU, JULY 10

A 42-year-old man was critically injured after allegedly setting himself on fire in Sisautiya village of Godaita Municipality-10, Sarlahi, on Friday afternoon.

According to the District Police Office, Sarlahi, the injured has been identified as Bibek Mandal of Sisautiya. Police said he walked about 200 metres away from his house before pouring petrol over his body and igniting it.

Mandal was initially rushed to the Provincial Hospital in Malangwa, where he received primary treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted to Kathmandu by a Nepal Army helicopter on Friday evening for specialised medical care.

DSP Bed Prasad Gautam, the information officer at the District Police Office, Sarlahi, said Mandal's condition is critical. He added that the motive behind the incident has not yet been established and an investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, sources said that House of Representatives member Dr Amaresh Kumar Singh, who represents Sarlahi Constituency-4, contacted the Prime Minister and the Home Minister after learning about the incident through social media, following which arrangements were made for the emergency helicopter evacuation.

Despite unfavourable weather conditions, the helicopter successfully transported the victim to Kathmandu. A doctor involved in his treatment said that a large portion of Mandal's body had suffered severe burns.
