A 28-year-old man sustained serious burn injuries after allegedly setting himself on fire by pouring petrol over his body in Rautahat's Garuda Municipality-9 early Wednesday morning, police said.

The injured has been identified as Gautam Kumar Sahani, son of local resident Devendra Sahani. According to the District Police Office, the incident occurred at around 1 am in Gamhariya Tole.

Police said Sahani suffered burns to about 31.5 percent of his body, from the neck down. He was rushed to Better Nepal Hospital in Garuda for primary treatment before being referred to Kirtipur Burn Hospital in Kathmandu at around 4:15 am for specialized care.

According to hospital officials, Sahani's condition was stable at the time of referral.

Police said they were informed of the incident at around 4 am, after which a team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Manoj Das from Birta Police Post was deployed to the scene.

The motive behind the incident has not yet been established, and further investigation is underway, police said.
