Mango garden conservation drive

Local residents of Timurebasi at Rainash Municipality have started a long overdue conservation drive to protect a 200-year-old mango garden in this village of Lamjung district.

Locals have formed an executive committee to oversee this conservation campaign, which they say will in the long term benefit the local community immensely.

According to Timure Mango Garden Protection Committee Chair Bishnu Panthi, there are 18 species of mangoes in the garden which spreads over 50 ropani land in the village. “We have launched the campaign to hand over the mango garden established by our ancestors to the new generation so as to save it from extinction,” he added. Panthi said they planned to expand the mango garden to other places as well.

Kapadesh Lamjung Chair Dikendraraj Kandel said they were united in the endeavour protect the mango trees as per the ‘community’s seed bank’ under the Livelihood Reform Programme.
