Maoists enforce chakka jam in Lamjung

Lamjung, March 12:

The Lamjung unit of All Nepal Trade Union Federation has announced an indefinite transport strike in the district, demanding action against Youth Force members who reportedly thrashed a few members of the Maoist youth wing.

Market places in Besisahar, Khudi, Udipur, Bhoteodar wore a deserted look today as most of the vehicles stayed off the roads. Passengers were stranded at several places due to the obstruction of long-route vehicles.

People had to walk for hours in the sweltering sun due to the transport strike.

Large numbers of YCL cadres marched in Beshisahar, announcing the bandh and warning strong protests if the guilty were not brought to book.

The strike was prompted by a feud between YCL and YF. Initially, a few YCL cadres attacked members of Youth Force, including its Lamjung vice-chairman Govinda Basnet, while the latter were celebrating Holi three days ago.

Later, a gang led by Basnet thrashed and injured Hari Danai, Lamjung vice-chairman of Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Teachers’ Organisation, Lamjung president of All Nepal Trade Union Shambhu Shrestha and Revolutionary Journalists’ Association’s Basu Thapa.

The Maoist demonstrated and gheraoed the district administration office yesterday as well. The Maoist sister wings have demanded action against Basnet and his associates who were involved in the beating of the cadres of the Maoist youth wing.
