KATHMANDU, APRIL 26

Matatirtha Aunsi, a day dedicated to honoring mothers with deep reverence, devotion, and gratitude, is being celebrated across the country today.

Observed on Baishakh Shukla Pratipada in the Nepali calendar, the day sees sons and daughters across the country presenting their mothers with clothes, sweets, fruits, and other gifts as tokens of love and appreciation, seeking their blessings in return.

Thousands of devotees also throng Matatirtha Kunda, a sacred pond located in Chandragiri Municipality, Kathmandu, to pay homage to their departed mothers. According to Hindu mythology, those who have lost their mothers can see their mothers' reflection in the pond on this new-moon day of Baishakh. Devotees offer sweets and flowers at the pond, believing that their offerings will reach their mothers and earn their blessings.

The village of Matatirtha, from which the festival derives its name, holds special significance as a spiritual site for this tradition.
