Mayors accused of working arbitrarily

Rautahat, August 4

Deputy mayors of Rautahat district have accused the mayors of working arbitrarily. They accused the mayors at a discussion programme organised in Gaur, Rautahat, today.

Speaking at the programme Ananta Adhikari, a legal professional,  said the problem existed in almost all local levels across the country. He said even though a deputy mayor was appointed as judicial committee’s coordinator, coordinator for planning monitor committee, budget counseling committee’s coordinator and coordinator for development budget ceiling committee, due to lack of law, deputy mayor  had no role in decision making.

Adhikari said deputy mayors had been facing problems in exercising powers after legal advisers at municipalities and rural municipalities started acting as per mayors’ behest. He added that no one could stop deputy mayors from exercising their authority. “The law approved by the municipal council will be implemented,” he added.

Deputy Mayor Club Chairman and Gaur Municipality Deputy Mayor Kiran Thakur said the mayors had released the budget for development planning of last fiscal without deputy mayors’ signature even if the deputy mayors were the coordinator of the monitoring committees. She hoped that the mediapersons would help stop mayors from taking decision arbitrarily. Deputy Mayor of Rajdevi Municipality Anshi Singh, Deputy Mayor of Madhav Narayan Municipality SimalKumariSah and Chandrapur Municipality Deputy Mayor RamratiChaudhary, among others, were present at the programme.
