KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 6
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli and CPN- Maoist Centre chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal have gathered at the PM's official residence in Baluwatar for a meeting.
The meeting between the heads of the three largest parties of the country will discuss existing issues surrounding the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact.
PM and president of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba, in a bid to ratify and subsequently implement the compact, has constantly held dialogues with leaders of the coalition government as well as with opposition leader Oli.
In today's meeting, Deuba is again expected to request Dahal, Oli to extend support to the incumbent government to ratify MCC within the allotted deadline - i.e February 28.
While coalition partners Maoist Centre and CPN- Unified Socialist have not shown positive signals on MCC implementation staying that it's would not be ratifies sans amendments, whereas UML chair Oli has given some 'mixed signals' to Deuba. It is being said that Deuba, in his attempt to go forward with MCC, is ready to forgo the current coalition and join hands with the UML to do so.
Recently, the details of a letter jointly written by Deuba and Dahal to the Board of Directors of the MCC had been published wherein it was revealed that the leader-duo had set the aforementioned deadline for implementation of the programme. Likewise, the board had written back to the two leaders asking them to ratify the compact by February 28, failing which the MCC would end its partnership with Nepal.
Meanwhile, it is being speculated that PM Deuba will also discuss the dates for local as well as provincial and federal election in today's meeting and announce the same via Monday's Cabinet Meeting.
