KATHMANDU, JULY 28

A 34-year-old Sherpa climber has broken his own record for the most climbs of Mt K2 as he scaled the world's second highest peak for the sixth time this season.

Mingma Gyabu Sherpa aka Mingma David from Talejung district stood atop K2 on July 27, said the base camp officials. Earlier, Mingma David scaled K2 on 26 July 2014, 21 July 2018, 16 January 2021, 22 July 2022 and 28 July 2022, using supplemental oxygen.

Sherpa is also the youngest person to complete all 14 highest peaks in the world. He set the world record at the age of 30 years 166 days. His first ascent was Everest on 23 May 2010 and his last was Shisha Pangma on 29 October 2019.

Mingma David also carried a flag of Everest Summiteers Association to the top of K2, said ESA General Secretary Shiva Bahadur Sapkota.

Sherpa also holds the record for the fastest climb of Everest and K2, taking just 61 days 55 minutes to reach both summits back in 2018. He was also part of the all-Nepalese team which made the first ever ascent of K2 in winter season in 2017. He was named "Sherpa of the Year" in 2019, winning the coveted Piolet d'Or Asia award - the alpinism equivalent to an Oscar.

Meanwhile, over 25 climbers including Nirmal Purja from Elite Exped scaled the mountain this morning, said base camp officials.
