KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 19
Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav, has warned that the Tarai-Madhes region faces a looming water crisis due to the impacts of climate change and rampant encroachment in the Chure region.
Speaking at an event on Tuesday commemorating the 53rd establishment day of the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management (DWSSM), the Minister voiced concerns over the rapidly depleting water resources in the Tarai-Madhes.
He cautioned that the region could confront an unmanageable water shortage if urgent and sustainable measures are not taken.
Minister Yadav also highlighted the challenges posed by the heavy rainfall on September 27-28, which caused significant damage to various water projects, further complicating the Ministry's efforts in water supply management. He urged the concerned authorities to prioritize the restoration of damaged water pipelines under the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.
Ministry Secretary, Engineer Pramiladevi Shakya Bajracharya, noted that this year's monsoon rains inflicted severe damage to water supply infrastructures, and repair efforts are actively underway.
Similarly, Department Director General, Engineer Ram Kumar Shrestha, stated that despite limited resources, the Department is striving to optimize efforts to manage water supplies effectively.
