ML 5.3 tremor rocks Kathmandu Valley, epicentre in Sindhupalchok near Tibet border

Epicentre is close to Nepal-Tibet border, near Golche in the Nepali side.

KATHMANDU: A significant jolt was felt in the Kathmandu Valley and adjoining region at around 09:57 pm.

It was of local magnitude 5.3 with its epicentre at 27.96 N, 85.73 E in Sindhupalchok, according to the National Seismological Centre.

The epicentre of the moderate aftershock of the April 25 Gorkha earthquake is close to Nepal-Tibet border, near Golche in the Nepali side.

Earlier today, a light aftershock of local magnitude 4.6 was recorded in Sindhupalchok at 10:06 am. An ML 4.0 aftershock was recorded in Dolakha district at 00:06 am.

According to the NSC, as many as 310 significant aftershocks (of ML 4.0 or above) have followed the massive  April 25 earthquake, which was of local magnitude 7.6, so far.

Over 20,000 minor shocks have also been recorded.

The official death toll of the devastating April 25 earthquake and aftershocks has reached 8786, while hundreds of people are still unaccounted for.

Over 23,300 people were injured.

As many as 3,440 people were killed in Sindhupalchok, 1,222 in Kathmandu and 1,098 in Nuwakot.
