More protesters get arrest warrants

Syangja, April 10:

At least eight local politicians, who were arrested while participating in a pro-democracy rally in Syangja district on Wednesday, have been jailed for 90 days with the effect from today.

The Nepali Congress national convention member Tulsi Giri, Syangja district president of Nepal Tarun Dal Govinda Ranabhat and district president of Syangja Nepal Student Union Muna Sekh have been jailed.

Other politicians who have been jailed under the Peace and Security Act include Chakra Bahadur Parajuli, Punya Bhusal, Mahendra Thapa, Dhruba Adhikari and Mohan Regmi of CPN-UML.

Twelve of those arrested on Wednesday were set freed the same day while other 21 were released on Friday.

Other political party cadres Khagendra Regmi, Jagat Bandhu Arayal, Shiva Kumar Adhikari and Surya Prasad Regmi have been jailed for 90 days under the same Act.

Meanwhile, in Surkhet former minister Yamlal Kandel and former Surkhet district development committee chairman Navraj Rawat, both CPN-UML cadres, have been sent to jail today under the provisions in the Peace and Security Act.

The two leaders were among those arrested while participating in protest rally in Surkhet on Friday.

Earlier, Kamalraj Regmi of Nepali Congress and Top Bahadur Rawat of Nepali Congress-Democratic had been jailed under the same Act.

Meanwhile, a report from Pokhara said eight different student and youth organisations have decided to hold protest rally in Pokhara tomorrow. Students and youth are to rally around the town with party flags shouting pro-democracy slogans. This decision was taken at a joint meeting of youth and student organisations held today.
