More VAW cases being registered thru helpline

More cases of violence against women (VAW) are being registered with national Women Commission ever since it launched its helpline — 1145 — for the victims of VAW.

According to NWC, the number of women registering VAW cases with National Women Commission through helpline has increased by 264 per cent, which shows that the helpline has made it easier for women to speak against injustice.

Before introducing the helpline, only 350 VAW cases were registered with NWC, while 1,275 cases have  been registered with NWC in the last one year after introducing helpline.

Palita Thapa, project manager of NWC, said that 7,261 information session (information services provided to survivors calling to the helpline)were recorded through helpline number.

In the fiscal year 2017/18, some 838 cases related to domestic violence were recorded. While in the fiscal 2016/17, 766 such cases were recorded. “Complaints regarding domestic violence are increasing every year, said Thapa.
