NC meet to decide stand on monarchy

Kathmandu, April 30:

The Nepali Congress today decided to call a meeting of the party’s district-level leaders to decide its stance on the monarchy. The NC is the only major party which has not yet taken a republican set-up as its political agenda.

The decision to call the meeting was taken after an informal meeting of the party’s central working committee, which convened at the official residence of Prime Minister and NC president Girija Prasad Koirala today.

The meeting to be held on May 4, 5 and 6 in the capital is to firmly tell the leadership what the party’s policy on monarchy should be.

The high points of the conference will be an address by PM Koirala and the suggestions the district leaders put forth. The NC deleted any reference to constitutional monarchy from its statute in the run up to the last general convention. The informal meeting of the party today drew up and finalised the party’s political agenda.

The agenda will be presented in the three-day meet in May, which will be attended by members of parliament and representatives of the NC’s sister organisations.
