NC men caution party over Maoist behaviour

Kathmandu, May 11:

The central working committee meeting of the Nepali Congress continued today with leaders urging the party to ensure checks and balance before handing over power to the CPN-Maoist.

The CWC meeting of the NC will convene again at 1.00 pm tomorrow at Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s official residence in Baluwatar.

Mahesh Acharya, Binay Dhoj Chand, Chiranjibi Wagle, Ram Krishna Tamrakar, Padma Narayan Chaudhari, Narhari Acharya, Govind Raj Joshi, Man Mohan Bhattarai, Sunil Kumar Bhandari, Bal Bahadur KC, Jeevan Bahadur Shahi, Jit Chhiring Lama Sherpa, NP Sawad, Pradeep Giri, Krishna Lal Sapkota and Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat spoke in today’s meeting according to Shobhakar Parajuli, chief secretary of the NC central office.

According to Dr Mahat, almost all the central committee members urged the party to make sure that Maoists truly commit themselves to democratic norms, dismantle parallel government bodies, transform YCL into a fully civilian organisation, return the seized property of the citizens and meet their obligation to implement all the peace pacts. “The next government will be an elected government. It’s a new situation and there is an urgent need of a provision of simple majority to form and oust a government. For this, the constitution should be amended,” Dr Mahat said in today’s meeting. According to him, other speakers also voiced similar concerns.

The speakers also deplored the ‘Maoists’ excesses’ being committed against NC cadres even after the completion of Constituent Assembly election. The NC leaders urged the party to institutionalise the party and not to join the Maoist led government.
