Kathmandu, February 9
The Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists has drawn the attention of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to contemporary environmental issues.
NEFEJ has long been advocating environment protection and sustainable development.
A NEFEJ delegation reached the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers today and met PM Dahal. The delegation also submitted a memorandum to PM Dahal on the pressing issues of environment and climate.
On the occasion, PM Dahal said the government was committed to providing support to the activities forwarded by NEFEJ, adding that it had been advocating issues of the environment for a long time.
Saying climate change is an issue of serious concern not only of Nepal but of the entire globe at present, the memorandum mentioned that Nepal is in the top row among countries impacted by climate change.
"Even though Nepal does not have a major role in climate change, it is bearing serious implications. The impacts of climate change on the economy, physical infrastructure and nature in Nepal may pose risks in the days ahead," the memorandum reads.
Moreover, incidents of natural disasters in Manang, Mustang, and Sindhupalchowk's Melamchi as well as other places have clarified the extreme impacts of climate change and new challenges that are emerging every year, thereby posing threats to people's livelihood, food security, bio-diversity, drinking water, and agriculture.
On the occasion, it was informed that NEFEJ had been playing an active role in creating public awareness of environment protection and sustainable development for 37 years through various media.
