Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa calls it a 'historic moment' for the country
KATHMANDU, AUGUST 1
Nepal has been elected as the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), marking a historic milestone in its multilateral engagement. The election took place on Thursday, with Nepal officially assuming the prestigious global position immediately thereafter.
Following the announcement, Nepal's Ambassador to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa, described the moment as "historic," highlighting the country's enduring commitment to multilateralism. Thapa said his presidency will focus on the motto "Delivering Better," emphasizing the need for stronger partnerships and effective implementation of global initiatives, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
"Delivering better is not an option - it is an imperative. It is our pathway to restoring trust in multilateralism, bridging divides, empowering the most vulnerable, and translating commitments into action," Thapa said.
Alongside Nepal, Amar Bendjama (Algeria), Héctor Gómez Hernández (Spain), Wellington Darío Bencosme Castaños (Dominican Republic), and Paruyr Hovhannisyan (Armenia) were elected as vice-presidents of ECOSOC for the upcoming term.
