Nepal, India conclude 2nd EPG meet in Delhi

KATHMANDU: The second meeting of the Eminent Persons Group on Nepal-India Relations concluded in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The meeting involving four intellectuals from each of the nations had begun on Tuesday.

It has been learned that the meeting decided to review the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship.

In the meeting, the Nepali side had put forth a proposal to amend some clauses of the treaty.

The Nepali side of bilateral body comprises Bhesh Bahadur Thapa, constitutional expert Nelamber Acharya, lawmaker Rajan Bhattarai and former Commissioner for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Surya Nath Upadhyay.

Indian lawmaker Bhagat Singh Kosiyari, former Ambassador to Nepal Jayant Prasad, professors BC Upreti and Mahendra P Lama are members of the body on behalf of the Indian side.

The expert panel’s maiden meeting was held in Kathmandu on July 3 and 4, which opened up discussion on existing Nepal-India bilateral agreements, including the 1950 treaty.

The EPG-NIR is a joint mechanism of Nepal and India for making necessary suggestions to update all existing bilateral treaties and agreements.
